In this episode, Eric, Katie, and Vondale are joined by Dr. Andrae Townsel, Superintendent of the Calvert County Public School System in Maryland to discuss the actionable tips and strategies to support the most vulnerable students in our classrooms.
Academically, Dr. Townsel motto as an educator and administrator is to, “SET the bar, MEET the bar, EXCEED the bar, RAISE the bar.”
However, we can’t just focus on students struggling academically. When we consider how students are struggling, we must remember that many students come to us experiencing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Many of them relive their trauma over and over again.
Thus, in addition to the academic support, we have to infuse the 5 core competencies of Social Emotional Learning into our instruction. These competencies are SELF-AWARENESS, SELF-MANAGEMENT, SOCIAL AWARENESS, RELATIONSHIP SKILLS, and RESPONSIBLE DECISION-MAKING.
